Discussion Questions and Activities - Chapters Eleven & Twelve
Chapter 11
On the Island: "So the old man and I would get up and go outside.
We'd sit on a stoop and gaze up at the stars and moon."
Pre-Chapter Discussion Questions
1. Do you like to look at the night sky?
2. Do you know why sometimes the moon can be seen in the sky during the day?
3. Can you name any stars in the night sky?
4. In the night sky, can you find the Big Dipper? Little Dipper?
Follow-Up Activity -- Full Moon Watch
Give each child a one-month blank calendar with enough space to draw the moon phases. Instruct them to go outside each night (day) and draw the moon's phase. Explain waning and waxing moons. Students might label each moon entry with phases: 1/2, 1/4, etc., and note if each is waxing or waning. Meet at sunset, on a full-moon night, and watch the moon rise.

would be enough money that Brother would let me come home again."
Pre-Chapter Discussion Questions
1. When you see someone begging on the street, what do you think?
2. When you see a homeless person, how do you feel?
Follow-Up Activity -- Feed a Hungry Person
Discuss reasons that a person might find him/herself living on the streets. Find out if the students would like to do a fund raiser to help the homeless. Visit a homeless shelter. As a group, have the students devise a plan to raise money to help the homeless. Example: Conduct a canned food drive to get supplies to cook a meal at the homeless shelter. Make arrangements for the children to do the fund raiser and act of charity.
